Chief minister Narendra Modi will hit the roads in rural Gujarat with 'garib kalyan melas' from September 13. In all, 119 melas or fairs will to organized by panchayat and rural development department covering beneficiaries in 223 talukas, eight municipal corporations and 159 municipalities.
Last year the government had organized such melas twice but this time the plan is to finish the event quickly, that is, till September 29.
Sources said the departments entrusted with the job of organizing the melas are giving final shape to the programme and the district authorities have been given targets.
"All the secretary- and district-level officials have been instructed to clear all the pending approvals of individual beneficiaries as early as possible and arrange proper distribution of sops during the melas. The chief minister will address most melas through video conference and some in person. All the BJP MLAs and MPs have been instructed to ensure that the event is a success. Benefits worth around Rs 2,000 crore will be distributed during the melas," sources said.
