J&K Terror Attack: 12 Killed Including Lt. Colonel

Thursday, September 26, 2013
Armed terrorists killed at least 12 people in Jammu on Thursday morning, first attacking a police station in Kathua district and then attacking an Army camp on the Jammu-Delhi national highway where a three-hour encounter ensued and is still underway.

While six people including two civilians were killed in the police station, six Army personnel were reportedly killed inside the Army cantonment mess in the adjacent district of Samba.

The attack began when three men in Army fatigues stormed the Era Nagar police station around 6. 50 am. Four policemen and two civilians were killed at the police station. The civilians include a shopkeeper named Suresh Kumar and a truck driver who was shot dead in his vehicle, which the attackers then fled with.

The attackers then surfaced in the adjacent district of Samba, at a large cantonment area with a few thousand army personnel posted inside.

A guard posted outside the main gate of the cantonment area was shot at and is believed to be dead.

Three gates lead into the cantonment area. The assailants managed to drive past the gates and entered the mess of the cantonment where they opened fire, taking Army personnel by surprise. In total, there are reportedly six casualties in the cantonment. Some more Army personnel are believed to have sustained injuries in the ensuing exchange of fire.

“The militants hijacked a truck after the attack on the police station and drove towards Jammu city and carried out another attack on Mesar army camp on Delhi-Jammu national highway near Samba town,” said Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General of Police for the Jammu range, told news agency ANI.

India has faced an insurgency in its part of Muslim-majority Kashmir since 1989 and has long accused Pakistan of supporting the militants fighting Indian rule.
